Playing the race card
One of the problems in America is the problem of being born biracial. The racist people get to decide which race you are not. Let me first cover the elephant in the room, Rachel Dolezal. She was born from parents who are white. She then tried to change her appearance as well as convincing people she was African American. Her parents then called her out for lying and she has admitted she was white.
Now, there is a gentleman called Shaun King who looks quite fair for an African American. He also looks passable as an African American. However, due to some questionable paperwork, the site Breitbart decided that this person was actually white. One of the reason raised was that when he was beaten up in for some racially motivated incident, the police checked under race as white instead of black. If I were a policeman who is interviewing a fair skin African American who had just been assaulted, there is a high chance I may have checked the wrong box too. I would be trying to get the facts of the case and not practise amateur anthropology. There are backers for both version of the story so it is not clear cut.
The next thing that they brought up was his birth certificate identifying both his parents as white. According to Shaun, one of the parent listed in the birth certificate was not his biological parent. I am however very interested in the topic of the birth certificate. When Obama released his short form birth certificate, did all the racist people stop saying that he was born in Kenya or other Muslim country? People promptly asked for the long form birth certificate. When Obama released the long form birth certificate, people started claiming it was a forgery. Other more imaginative people like Trump started asking Obama's education records but that is a story for another day.
In 2016, an African American called Ben Carson claims that he would be the first African American President if elected as Obama was raised white. He then tried to explain that he meant that Obama was raised as middle class while he was raised in poverty. Why is the issue of race brought up by Ben Carson? The issue is that Obama looks like an African American which is why the racist people assumed that he was Kenyan or Muslim. But because Obama got the support of African American, he is a liar because one of his parent is white. Obama's birth certificate does not prove anything when racist people do not want it to.
Elizabeth Warren is another victim. Trump enjoys calling her "Pocahontas" even though she has not done anything native American like. She identified herself as having native American heritage as her great-great-great grandmother as a Cherokee. The best part of the story is that her Senate rival claimed that she had fabricated the story to gain unfair advantage.
It is sad that Obama may have been the first African American President but there are still some Americans who are not ready for one.
