New words and phrases in 2017

This year we the people are learning about of new terms about lying (Or what the White House says is true)


  • Alternative facts: How to defend your own team members when they are caught with a brazen lie
"You're saying it's a falsehood. And they're giving -- Sean Spicer, our press secretary -- gave alternative facts," Kellyanne Conway discussing the first Sean Spicer press briefing where Sean claimed that the Trump's inauguration "was the largest audience to ever witness an inauguration, period."
  • In quotes: A political mulligan when the author's bad grammar skill is hailed as artistic license.
“The president used the word ‘wiretapped’ in quotes to mean broadly surveillance and other activities during that.“ Sean Spicer's actual comments in a press briefing. This came a week after Trump had tweeted that Obama had tapped his phones in Trump Tower. 
  • Passing on news report: Disavowing previously trusted (or current inconvenient) advisors while not taking any responsibility    
First, Sean had read a news report stating that a Fox News commentator claiming that the British Intelligence bugged Donald Trump in 2016. Naturally, the British government retorted that the claim was utterly baseless. Hence, Sean Spicer's remarks, "We were just passing on news reports."   
  • I am the least (fill in the anti-discriminatory claim) that you have ever (fill in the desired hyperbole ). : Claiming to be perfect so as to end the conversation on difficult topic 
"I am the least anti-Semitic, racist person that you’ve ever seen" Trump to a room full of reporters which included the reporter wearing a yarmulke.
  • I am quoting: Passing the buck. Hinting blamelessness to avoid the topic. 
"Well, I’m not, well, I think, I’m not saying, I’m quoting, Michael, I’m quoting highly respected people and sources from major television networks." Trump when asked about why he allowed his press secretary to use an unsubstantiated news report that was proven to be false.
