If you ask a kid what ducks eat, you will usually hear things like fish or bread. Although ducks are omnivores, most species of ducks do not depend on fishes especially if they are domesticated. (Man tend to domesticate herbivores or omnivores as a rule. It is easier for the farmer to feed them.) Ducks do eat insects, vegetables and whatever they can hunt or find on a farm. It is possible to let ducks forage away from fish-free waters. It is possible for free range farmed ducks to live healthily without tasting fish,
So why do we think ducks eat fish? Well, ducks can swim and they are rather ungainly on land. Logically, we will assume that the swimming trait has a better use than for aquatic exercise. The truth is that fishes are not exactly plentiful and easy to catch even in the wild. The wild cousins of ducks usually have a more varied diet that includes crustacean and amphibians.
Most animals have a rather diverse diet and those animals have a unique diet usually find it difficult to survive (Think about the panda). The rule of thumb is that if the livestock does not eat grass and is domesticated, it usually has a very varied diet.
Now I have covered about the natural diet for ducks, I have to cover about the artificial diet of animals. Most animals do poorly on a store bought processed food human diet. This is including the junk food diet which is also unhealthy for humans. If you ever want to feed any animal, do some research on its diet before feeding it or you may do more harm than good.
