Invasive species

There are two views towards invasive species. Some people feel that the complaints are similar to those whose home team has their shit stuffing kicked out of them. Some even view the invasive species as beneficial. The upside includes having a new species to hunt or sometimes more attractive prey to hunt. Many believe that there are simple solutions to manage the invasive species. One method is to introduce a new predator or disease to control the problem. The problem is that the predator may choose new preys (Read native animals) to feed on. Or in the some cases, cause new problems. (Eg. The cane toad introduced in Australia started poisoning pets and even humans.)

In the case of plants, the invasion is even worse. The Singapore Daisy (Which does not originate in Singapore) is often sold as an ornamental plant thus continuing its sprawl in new environment. It is known to occupy several acres in several countries.

The downside of invasive species is that it is usually not very precious. One does not hear of the swarming of ginseng or wasabi plant (If it is occurring, it is one of the best kept secret.). Animals that are invasive species seldom have ivory or body parts (Eg. Gall Bladder) that are highly sourced after.

Another issue with invasive species is that they usually multiple quickly. This allows the species to gain a foothold easily in the environment. It also means that eradicating them takes constant effort. (Plants have a distressing tendency to have drop their seeds in the ground or grow roots below the soil. Hence the constant effort.) Moreover, they often resemble or behave similarly to some local fora or fauna which makes a blanket scorch earth plan impossible.

Lastly, some invasive species are man made. They are some times introduced to perform a roles that the local flora or fauna does not do. The downside is that the side effects of invasive species is that the actual cost to the environment is not foreseeable. This leads to the "law of unintended consequences" going into effect.

Did I say that there are two views? Now comes the controversial part of the article. Some people do view migrants the same way as an invasive species. Now I am not saying that I hold the same view. However, this does explain the people who voted for the Brexit due to unhappiness about the migrants issues.

How unhappy? I read in the papers that a British writer was upset that his Asian wife who is a graduate has a more difficult time staying in England than an EU person who is unemployed and uneducated who can't speak English. We have also heard stories of people demanding foreigner or non-British people to leave the country after the Brexit.

There are people who are upset that foreigners are buying property in England and pricing the locals out of the market. Naturally, this unhappiness is targeted towards certain foreigners. (Aka those foreigners who cannot afford Chelsea FC. Or even worked for Chelsea. I doubt the British people were upset with Juan Mata. Or even Jose Mourinho)

I also understand the points that some immigrants are catering only to their own community and this changes the British towns. (I understand that as I have sometimes have to go into such areas to work (in my own country) and the food is less than appetising.) But it is not like the immigrants are going to change their diet to suit the host country. A constant diet of fish and chips and shepherds pie can drive non locals nuts.

Now the hard part awaits Britain. Immigrant management. Try to keep out immigrants and you might find yourself trying to exclude your own citizens as well. Not complicated enough? How about citizens with foreign spouses or other family members? Make things too discriminatory and even tourist won't come. The worst part is that whatever immigrants from EU that you want to exclude, the EU sure is going to retaliate by either Britain market access.

So what is the best plan going forward? The sad fact is that the people who voted for the EU leaving were led by leaders who refuse to listen to reason or experts. From implying that experts were like Nazi scientists, to people should not be listening to experts. the words of a British minister is quite worrying. Perhaps the minimum wage in Britain ought to be the same as Michael Gove's current pay since he is asking the people not to trust in him but in themselves. I guess all British citizen will get a red box every day to read every night too. I guess that is why some British people are now looking into getting Irish citizenship.

"The trouble with an open mind, of course, is that people will insist of coming along and trying and  put things in it." Terry Pratchett.
