Myths 102

One thing I always dislike about movies is that they usually get things about firearms incorrect. Firearms do have limited ammunition. Firing most firearms in an enclosed area is loud and you will have problems hearing after a gunfight. And don't get me talking about the hot brass casings flying around when a semi or fully automatic weapon is fired. That is why most people who fire weapons regularly are often fully dressed at the range.

One thing that I believe is that if a person is firing a modern semi-automatic pistol, the shooter will always be able to tell when the pistol has run out of ammunition. The slide will be locked at the rearward position after the last round is fired. You will however see that most movies show the semi-automatic pistol to run dry with the slide in the forward position. I will then rave about how facts are ignored for the convenience of the screen writers.

And then a pistol has to come along and show that slide locks can be optional. Meet the Kal Tech P3AT. It does not lock the slide in the rearward position once the gun is empty.

So the only thing that I can talk you is that even in guns, there is always something new.
