The best job

The Singapore Army is giving their conscripts a choice of vocations before they are enlisted. As a person who has gone through the army, this is my opinion of the list of vocations.

•Air defence
It is the umbrella of the army which protects the rest of the army from steel rain of the enemies' air force. Occasionally you also have to stop aerial voyeurs but that is another story. The only issue in this day and age is that you will be likelier to shoot down UAV than manned aircraft.

•Armour
It is one of the safest units to be in. The rest of the army has to depend on what protection they can carry physically. Your transport carries it for you. One downside is that you will be one of the biggest targets in battle. And for some soldiers, your troop carrier is a little thin skin as compared to your other vehicles. One other downside is that the vehicles are pretty high maintenance.

•Artillery
These guys have the biggest guns in the army. Basically, your firepower can take a few minutes to do what the other units will take hours or even days to do. Unfortunately, you only have minutes to do so as the enemies big guns would like to do the same stuff to you. The round (Singular) that you have to manually load is usually hernia causing. If the ammunition you carry is not hernia causing, you will be expected to carry its hernia causing gun as well.

•Combat engineers
You have a job because the rest of the army is too fragile. So you have build bridges or clear areas so that the rest of the army can do their work without getting their feet wet or stopped at the first obstacle. If the other units are getting their butt kick, you will have to build fortifications or other nasty projects. You will usually be doing your work under enemy fire. For some unfortunate people in this unit, they will find that they have to carry their toys into battle. Their back-breaking, hernia causing toys. The upside is that the rest of the army is NOT envious of you.

•Infantry
The silent majority as they do not have as much firepower. But most time, the enemy will have many people and the infantry is the only way to pest control. In this day and age, you will have to be content with police action, disaster relief or other peacekeeping activities. Downsides include carrying all your stuff and then walking to combat.

•Guards
For people who are brave and tough enough to be Infantry but do not like the walking. For these brave soul,s the army will fly you into combat. The only downside of these frequent flyers is that you will have to wait for the rest of the army to catch up. And the enemy will be doing their best to keep you company.

•Intelligence
It is classified. Whatever you communicate will be edited redacted summarized for the public. It is a living hell for those people who like to brag.

•Island defence
I have never heard of this unit. Apparently, it gets to guard important and vulnerable locations in Singapore. I guess this the lesson learnt after September 11th. Everything is a target.

•Logistics
Great for people who hate walking. You usually get first dibs on stuff. (Duh). Unless you are medical and find that your unit is amalgamated to a logistic unit. (Medical team is merely moving the meat. It is just that the meat has to stay alive) The downside is that you will find that the rest of the army are thieving rats who like to purloin your stores.

•Maintenance
Remember the part about the high maintenance. You get to fix whatever the rest of the army cannot repair or accidentally break. You are the big sister to the rest of the army. The downside is that you have to fix heavy stuff with thin skin vehicles or even exposed to enemy fire. Ahh, nothing a little gunfire can't speed up.

•Medical
If you hate walking, you will hate it here. Your equipment is one of the heaviest and you will be expected to carry people. Most of the time you will be expected to be a beast of burden. When there is an emergency, you will be expected to be Florence Nightingale

•Military police
As you can tell, the army is not exactly one big happy family. It is not even a dysfunctional one. Some people tend to bring their civilian bad habits into the army. Other people tend to get corrupted in the army. Your job is to make sure that people do as they are instructed while not breaking the rules. The only upside is that some of you will get to play with dogs.

•Naval operations
Assuming that you are not dying to be braver than the Guards, you will enjoy it here. Firstly, there is little walking. The downside is that if you are claustrophobics. Then you will really hate it if they send you on board a submarine. If you are braver than the Guards, you will find that there is a lot of walking, running, swimming and boating. You are assured of boating because most of your running and walking involves carry a boat around.

•Signals
You are the long-term experiment to see if radiation from communication devices will cause cancer. We have to assume it is safe as this unit continues to thrive and get new and more fancy stuff to experiment. Downsides include walking long distances and talking in code at the same time. You are also targetted by most enemies based on the communication equipment you are using or carrying.

•Transport
The only guaranteed unit to avoid walking. Unless the vehicle breaks down. The downside is that you will be driving slowly in the night, without lights across cross-country terrain. And the army tends to send you into muddy areas where you will discover that the vehicle's all-terrain reputation is not as cracked up as it is supposed to be. If you are driving civilian vehicles, you have it worse. The upside of driving civilian vehicles is the air con and other creature comforts built in.
