I use to think that fungi are almost untouchable in the animal kingdom.
Fungal infections? Almost every creature is vulnerable. Plants or animals. A characteristic of fungi is that they are heterotrophs. They cannot make their own food. And because they are not able to move, they have to reproduce before their food source is finished. And the next breeding ground is other creatures.
For some unlucky insects, the fungus is a parasitoid. That is a nice way of saying that you are dead even if you have not stopped breathing.
For other creatures, the fungi do not spare you even when you are dead. Some plants have a mutualistic relationship with the fungi.
I knew about reindeer eating mushrooms to get high. But I had assumed that the rest of the animal kingdom gave them a wide berth.
Spot the insect on the mushroom that did not get the memo?
Apparently, it is not a one-sided affair.
