Time is running out

Imagine that every day, you have ten minutes to get your food, drinks and whatever essentials. No, I am not talking about rationing or being at a sale on Black Friday. This is the life of an ant.

Not any ant, mind you. A silver ant. This ant stays in its nest every day until the ant lizard finds it too hot to stay out in the sun. At this point, the sun is still not at its zenith which the temperature has still room to increase. This is when the silver ants rush out of its nest to locate food and bring it back to the nest.

Normally ants leave a trail of pheromone for each other to follow. However, this is not an option available to the silver ant due to the high temperature and short time available. So the ants have to navigate using the sun from and back to the nest.

The goods news for the silver ants is that their prey is usually stricken by the heat so they do not need to fight the prey. The downside is that their preys are still usually heavier than them so carrying the prey back to the nest is not an easy task. At this point, teamwork is required so other ants will help to carry back the prey.

Not every ant makes it back but enough survivors and food make it back into the safety of the nest on a daily basis.
