Open season
For those readers who do not hunt or are not familiar with hunting lexicons, open season is the period when authorities allow hunters to hunt certain species of animals. Hunting outside of such seasons is deeming as illegal poaching. This tends to drive bad hunters nuts because the animals are less vulnerable out of season. Moreover, it is not always possible to predict what animal will turn up during a hunt.
The rule for hunters is to recognise that hunting laws are seldom meant for their personal short term gains. There are meant for conservationists, people who do not like to listen to gunfire or risk being shot by accident or even hunters with less selfish views.
The reason why I am writing this article is not to advocate hunting. I am rather indifferent to hunting except if it endangers me. I am not just referring to hunting with firearms or projectile weapons. Those weapons are illegal where I live and the punishment is pretty steep for owning them (Discharging them is a more serious crime). I am also against traps and snares that can injure the innocent hiker.
The reason why I am writing this article is because the current ruling party in America believes that it is open season to hunt everything they desire in the America. Cut "meals on wheels" in the name of being fiscally conservative. No problem. If people oppose it, sell it that the people need more defence spending but less food for their own senior or disabled citizens. Strangely, I could not find any defenders for the cuts to the program "meals on wheels".
However, the issue that takes the cake is the duck ramp. There are two ramps made for ducklings to get in and out of a pond in the national capital of America. The ramps appear to be rather flimsy so I assume they did not cost a lot of money to build. A Republican politician decided to make a "clever" tweet remarking about the duck ramp as government waste.
It turned out to be a bad idea. Most social media consumers are young. They also like animals based on the number of animal videos that are watched. To say that the politician faced a lot of unhappiness on the internet is an understatement. Now, I have no idea if the duck ramps work or if they cost a fortune. However, I can tell you complaints about ducklings will not win you any votes.
Americans spend money getting cats out of trees and saving other pets. They also will not champion any idea that suggests leaving their innocent citizens to die. Certain "animals" are not meant to be hunted no matter what dystopian fantasies you spin. Conservatives like to talk about the good old days but even that has limits. People once ate swans but you hardly hear about swan poaching or swan in recipes in the recent years.
Don't believe me? Let me give some suggestions to help America to save money. Close down all military weapons ranges in America. Let the soldiers hone their skills on actual targets. Abandon building could be targetted for heavy weapons testing. Moreover, there is a benefit of a levelled building after the ordinance is fired. Abandon vehicles could be used for anti-armour practices. It will save on towing and storage costs. Send soldiers with live ammo and weapons to hunt for their food. They not only get to hone their firearms skills but also tracking skills, their outdoor survival skills. What a lot of money we could save if only we sacrifice the sacred cows.
