Saved by software
One problem with taking photos is that the light is never perfect for the intended shot. Wildlife happily walks from the open into the shade. Birds fly in and out of trees.
So take this picture. The lighting is terrible. You have to strain your eyes to detect any features.
Look at the edited photo below. I can see that it is an Oriental Dollarbird.
Take the more recent squirrel. You barely see its features. Its outline is clear but nothing else.
Photo edited and presto. No more dark blob. You can see the paws, eyes and seed in its mouth.
Recovery is not an improvement as you can see from an increased exposure (actually overexposed) shot of the same critter. The output from the camera is still better.
