Hand that rocks the cradle
I just learned an interesting fact. Ostriches lay their eggs in a communal nest.

There will be the first lady who will raise all the other chicks as her own. One mother, one baby sitter and one guardian. But before the ostriches are hatched, the egg that is laid by the literal stand in will be in the center of the nest. The first lady will practice infanticide by removing weaker eggs if there are too many.
The nest is dug by the father. The eggs are sat upon by the entire family. Mothers in the day. Father at night. Father apparently does most of the raising of the babies.
One additional fact about fertilized eggs. When incubating eggs, they have to be rotated periodically so that the unhatched chick is not stuck to the shell. Now the ostrich does this by standing but using its head to turn the eggs. So that is one possible reason for the bury its head in the sand myth
