Animal myths

Every once in a while, I would stumble upon certain facts about animals that turn out to be wrong.

Take the myth about honey. Bears are supposed to love honey. Afterall why would they be destroying hives? But this is wrong. the bear will not attack the hive for the honey but for the grubs in the hives. Bears are eating the baby bees to get the protein and the fats. The honey is merely dessert.

But what about cats? We have domesticated them so we should know more about them. Even if we do not know them intimately, we should know what they eat. Cats are supposed to eat mice and rats. But that is not possible for a hunter to target only a few species. The truth is that cats hunt a lot of small animals. But rodents tend to decrease when cats are around. That is due to the scent of the cat's urine. Mice tend to avoid it. But their bigger cousins, rats are not "taking the piss".

What about the myth about cocks crowing at the crack of dawn? Anyone with a rooster knows that the natural alarm clock goes off when it wants. Even at midnight. But cocks are not the only gender that crows. The hens are also able to do it.
