What makes a beautiful shot? I always believe distance is a criterion. Once you are able to get the desired focus as well as frame the shot, the shorter distance will make a difference.
Take this kingfisher. It looks acceptable. It was taken on a cloudy day so the details looked a little washed out. Distance of subject: 20M
But if the weather (OK, lighting) was a factor, the picture below was taken one-handed (the other hand was holding an umbrella). You can see the texture of the feathers. Distance of subject: 5M
Now, the simple answer would be to approach the animal as closely as possible. But the number of butt shots and empty frame shots suggest that solution is not easy. The kingfisher stayed still because of the strong wind.
