The 3 A's of learning - Part 2

Now, that you are aware of a new idea, method or process, the next step is more difficult. We have heard terms like armchair general and Monday night quarterbacks thrown around to describe people with only awareness but claiming enlightenment. The problem with awareness is that the information is not backed by experience. Anybody with a little understanding can mouth off on the topic.

So what is the missing ingredient? Application. If you have not tried something, you will not be able to access its difficulty accurately. Now before everyone starts suggesting that people be thrown into the deep end, I need to point out that learning can be a long process and few people will succeed with on the job training.

Take flying a plane. Before you can learn to fly a plane, you should be able to speak and read. You need to be able to communicate with the control towers and understand their instructions. You should be able to read a map and understand the instruments on the plane (Written in English or with Arabic numerals). If you are studying and practising the necessary courses to learn to fly, this counts towards the application process. If you are just attending the intro course, this counts towards the awareness process.

There are stories about geniuses who understand a subject by just being exposed once. Discounting these exceptions, everybody has to train to get better.

Take the mystery bird below. I could just bluff a name for its species and be done with it.

Few people besides Audobon members and Ornithologist will be able to catch me out on my bluff. So R & D, here I come.

Update:
It is an Olive Winged Bulbul.
Here is a couple.

Same couple different pose.
